Pelvic physiotherapy is an evidence-based treatment for common conditions within the pelvis, like incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain. A registered physiotherapist with extra training in pelvic health can provide assessment and treatment of the muscles, nerves, joints, and bones in the pelvis, abdomen, hips, and low back. The pelvic floor muscles, a group of muscles that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs, are often the focus of the treatment. The function of these muscles can impact, and be impacted by many different conditions, including persistent/chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic girdle pain, sexual pain, vulvodynia, vestibulodynia, vaginismus, painful bladder syndrome, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, pre-natal and post-natal conditions in pregnancy and beyond, bladder and bowel incontinence, overactive bladder, constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, perimenopause, post-menopause, and pre- and post-surgical care, including hysterectomy.

Pelvic physiotherapy assessment and treatment extends beyond the pelvic floor muscles to consider the rest of the body, too. This includes the upper extremities and rib cage, plus the lower extremities including your knees and your feet. That old ankle problem that won't heal? Believe it or not, it could be connected to your pelvic floor muscle function!
